Biosphere - Departed Glories (M)
Regular price £23.00Mint secondhand copy.
It’s easy to forget that Norway shares a short stretch of frontier with Russia, right at the northernmost tip of the country. That region is where Geir Jenssen, the Norwegian electronic producer behind Biosphere, comes from, and where he has been composing his austere, disturbing and deeply textured ambience since the early 1980s.
Biosphere has released many albums to date including 'Substrata,' voted the greatest ambient album of all time on the Hyperreal website, and has collaborated with Arne Nordheim, Higher Intelligence Agency, Deathprod, Pete Namlook and Bel Canto.
His 12th album 'Departed Glories' is his first in almost five years and marks a new deal with the Oslo independent label Smalltown Supersound. On the cover is a photo of the Russian landscape taken more than a hundred years ago. It’s part of an incredible cache of recently discovered images by the photographer Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky, who pioneered a form of colour photography using three sheets of glass, and left us with a collection of hauntingly beautiful pictures of a vanished world that could have been taken on an iPhone.

Eppu Kaipainen - Poiu
Regular price £8.00Helsinki based producer Eppu Kaipainen returns to Decaying Spheres. Poiu explores how music can change our perception of time, with an investigation into the Eno-creed of ambient; when something is both ignorable and focusable, lending itself to an amorphous feeling of time.
The seven tracks convey a sense of temporal empathy, reflecting on life’s instabilities, it’s constant precursors; a dramatic change, a shift, a turnaround, a relapse. The album explores both the significant and insignificant. The juxtaposition of the momentous and the monotonous. Like the beauty that can be found in a typical week, the ritualistic nature of stability and routine is as essential as those more pivotal moments.
Poiu is a collection of long-form drones that elegantly interprets these themes through considered tape loops, saturated synths and layered modular sequences, creating a lush atmospheric sound that never quite lets the underlying darkness come to the forefront.
Limited edition cassette tape - only 25 copies worldwide.

Various - Hidden Shelters
Regular price £10.00Decaying Spheres presents an essential release from artists 01 Ambience and Ozyorsk. Hidden Shelters featured as the soundtrack to an intimate audio installation, narrating the personal accounts of four LGBT refugees.
Traversing the dark undertones that bind the stories of those refugees together, Hidden Shelters draws a parallel on the emotions evoked by the individuals. These minimal compositions carefully create a feeling of anxiety, isolation and paranoia. Ominous analogue synths, isolated arpeggiators and dense pads are layered with field recordings of Manchester, forming a unique ambient landscape.
Hidden Shelters first premiered as part of Manchester International Festival 2019, elevating the unique journeys of people directly affected by the international LGBT refugee and homeless crisis. The event gave the individuals a platform to share their stories and raise awareness about the issue through first-hand interviews.
The project is supported by a grant from Superbia at Manchester Pride. Superbia Grants provide financial support for LGBT events as part of Manchester Pride’s commitment to the quality and diversity of cultural events taking place throughout the year in Greater Manchester.
All profit from vinyl sales will go to charities Safe Place International and akt.
ckeener - Decoration
Regular price £6.00Carl Brown announces a new project ckeener and turns in his first album for Them There. ‘Decoration’ sees a swift sidestep for Brown, bridging the unfettered field recording led work as Preston Field Audio with Them There Records’ principal pop absurdity. Using found sounds and recordings collected on an iPhone and Zoom for over two years, Brown has shaped an album of raucous plunderphonics and freesound sampledelia.
Until now Brown’s work has been focused on his now internationally celebrated project Preston Field Audio, including recent collaborations with KAARST, Plymouth artist Keith Harrison and sold out releases for Concrete Tapes and his own label Set Foot Press.
Mastered by Tim Crompton at Another Studio Manchester, the album also features additional production from Them There’s Pun Collins. A proper in-house job.
Pun Collins - DYING TOGETHER
Regular price £7.00Pun Collins lands back at Them There for his new solo release titled 'Dying Together’. Following on from his previous LP for Them There, 2018’s minimalist-pop ‘Lunar Influence’, ‘Dying Together’ proves a natural progression for Axel Lacan as he further explores the peripheries of post-genre dance music for an optimistic perspective on the end times. Prophetic themes of isolation are a linchpin to Lacan’s often bleak narratives. In navigating us through this new record, Lacan searches for the dim lights on the horizon, frequently weaving in moments of sheer new-age ecstasy so as never to let the vibe settle.
Offering up his essential pallet of spectral synths, deep subs, and organic, layered percussion as a framework, darkly cinematic architectures crumble away as Lacan once again holds us at the precipice of a myriad of musical influences. The abstract sound world created here is a highly nuanced blanket, detailed with Pun Collins’ signature dynamic and pacing smoothly draped over a bed of Ambient, Trance, Funk, and Soul.
Chris Ruffoni - Solarphones
Regular price £6.00Them There Records presents the new album ‘Solarphones’ from Yorkshire based musician and sound artist Chris Ruffoni. These new recordings are taken from a touring installation project in which Chris explores positioning his bespoke, handbuilt wooden sculptures named Solarphones amidst various outdoor spaces to interact with the sunlight, shadow and the architecture of the setting.
Presented on this release as two 22 minute field recordings, chosen as highlights from numerous installations in woodland and reservoirs around West Yorkshire between April and May 2020. The instruments are tuned in modes using just intonation, each side of the tape reflects one mode.
Throughout Summer 2020 ‘Solarphones’ has been invited to be installed at several (unfortunately postponed) UK festivals including Supernormal and Bluedot Festival.
James Blake - Assume Form
Regular price £27.00Mercury award winner James Blake releases his 4th studio album Assume Form. The album features collaborations with Travis Scott, André 3000, Metro Boomin, Moses Sumney and Rosalía (BBC sound poll 2019). In the past 2-3 years James has been very busy collaborating with Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Jay Z, Frank Ocean, Oneohtrix Point Never, Mount Kimbie and contributing to the Black Panther soundtrack. As unrestricted by genre as it is always underpinned by classic, emotionally-open songwriting, James Blake’s new album is arguably his most direct, eclectic and pure artistic statement to date. Assume Form also follows a rich period of creative and personal evolution for James, who has spoken candidly about his experiences of mental health, modern-day masculinity, and finding peace. Even the album artwork would appear to represent a fundamental shift for Blake, no longer distorted by illustration, landscape or design, but staring right at you – and into the future.
James Blake’s is an influence that can be felt throughout the modern musical landscape, often hiding in plain sight; allowing the man himself – as his fourth album suggests – to always evolve. To never settle. To Assume Form.
