If you’re like me and got into punkrock through 90ies Epitaph/Fat Wreck releases, then ‘Sound The Sirens’ will feel a bit like going back in time.
On album number four, Southern California skate punks Chaser will make you think of everyone from early Rise Against and Pennywise to Bad Religion, Ignite and No Use For A Name. Often in the same song. In the span of give-or-take 10 seconds. It’s all double-time drums, big melodic hooks, solid shredding and all the whoa’s you could possibly ask for.
Them There Records presents the new album ‘Solarphones’ from Yorkshire based musician and sound artist Chris Ruffoni. These new recordings are taken from a touring installation project in which Chris explores positioning his bespoke, handbuilt wooden sculptures named Solarphones amidst various outdoor spaces to interact with the sunlight, shadow and the architecture of the setting.
Presented on this release as two 22 minute field recordings, chosen as highlights from numerous installations in woodland and reservoirs around West Yorkshire between April and May 2020. The instruments are tuned in modes using just intonation, each side of the tape reflects one mode.
Throughout Summer 2020 ‘Solarphones’ has been invited to be installed at several (unfortunately postponed) UK festivals including Supernormal and Bluedot Festival.
Carl Brown announces a new project ckeener and turns in his first album for Them There. ‘Decoration’ sees a swift sidestep for Brown, bridging the unfettered field recording led work as Preston Field Audio with Them There Records’ principal pop absurdity. Using found sounds and recordings collected on an iPhone and Zoom for over two years, Brown has shaped an album of raucous plunderphonics and freesound sampledelia.
Until now Brown’s work has been focused on his now internationally celebrated project Preston Field Audio, including recent collaborations with KAARST, Plymouth artist Keith Harrison and sold out releases for Concrete Tapes and his own label Set Foot Press.
Mastered by Tim Crompton at Another Studio Manchester, the album also features additional production from Them There’s Pun Collins. A proper in-house job.

Good time music alert. If Janet Planet, Sugar Bones, Clarence McGuffie and Reggie Goodchild weren’t a band already you’d be snapping at their heels demanding they form one quick-sharp. Fact is, they are, and they release Confident Music For Confident People, their 11-track debut album for Heavenly Recordings.
Confident Music For Confident People is a big pop album that hints at Dee-lite, LCD Soundsystem, Talking Heads and The Avalanches. Standout tracks Boyfriend, Bubblegum and Better Sit Down Boy are big and brash and bright as hell, like Dee-Lite tooled up and ready for our berserk modern times. Here is a set of songs that take the kind of all-consuming interior monologues that bored, disaffected youth are wrestling with the world over and places them square in the middle of the dance floor before adding call-and-response choruses for good measure – it’s the best collection of perfect pop music you’ll hear all year, the perfect embodiment of the characters that made it that somehow manages to be both wildly ambitious and deceptively simple at the same time.

Tutti is Cosey Fanni Tutti's first solo album since 1982's Time to Tell, and is an exploration of her self, life and art. It was created to be the soundtrack to Harmonic Coumaction, a film about Tutti. The album features the unsettling pounding synths we've come to expect from the Throbbing Gristle crew but is made more personal in how Tutti incorporates other elements.
Sad hits for all the family (lest there are happy members of it), it's the brand new record by not-at-all-super stars Cult Party! This wonderful band may have been a solitary, self-preserving bedroom band once upon a time, but on And Then There Was This Sound songwriter Leo Robinson opens up his sounds with the help of pals including weirdo rocker Kiran Leonard. Creative and wayward without sacrificing the delicate and skeletal sound of old, this record is bound to be special.

Daniel Avery & Alessandro Cortini - Illusion Of Time
Illusion of Time is a collaboration between acclaimed electronic producer Daniel Avery and Nine Inch Nails collaborator Alessandro Cortini. The project has come together over a number of years. Before they’d even met, they had communicated the idea that they wanted to work together and started working separately, without theme or deadlines. The album came together when they were both part of the Nine Inch Nails touring set up in 2018.
A truly special two-sided picture disc featuring imagery unavailable elsewhere - one side features the cover art and the other, the floor of the Dark Crystal's chamber: a circle of 18 arcane symbols, one for each of the urSkeks that came to Thra during the first Great Conjunction.
Composer Daniel Pemberton reveals: “I wanted the music to be as magical as Thra itself – organic, imperfect, strange, mystical, otherworldly and wonderful. I wanted to create new sounds that felt like they came from the world itself, as well as using thematic large scale orchestral elements to bring an emotion to the journey of the characters.
There are two Dark Crystal picture discs being released for Record Store Day, with completely different track listings.
The 10 episode prequel to the groundbreaking 1982 fan favorite The Dark Crystal stars Taron Egerton, Star Wars’ Mark Hamill, Harry Potter’s Helena Bonham-Carter, Tomb Raider star Alicia Vikander and Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe.
'American Utopia' is the first solo record in 14 years from iconic polymath David Byrne. The album comes as part of a larger project entitled 'Reasons To Be Cheerful' - a series of works that strives to antidote pervasive social and political anxieties. In keeping with this, 'American Utopia' questions realities of contemporary culture with playful writing that shifts perspectives and favours optimism over despairing pessimism.
Being the product of working with 25 collaborators, 'American Utopia' feels like something of a sonic patchwork, but doesn't ever feel sprawling, neatly tied together by Byrne's inimitable sense of melody and harmony. 'American Utopia' doesn't offer any transcendental conclusions on how to save the world, but advocates positive and unusual ways of looking at the world around us, and with a career underpinned by a singular and indescribable quirkiness, Byrne is the ideal candidate the job.
Deftones - Digital Bath (Telefon Tel Aviv) RSD 2021
Denise Johnson's debut acoustic album 'Where Does It Go' is a very Mancunian affair. Recorded in Ancoats with Thomas Twemlow on acoustic guitar, she covers iconic songs that mean something to her from Manchester bands including New Order, The Smiths & 10cc as well as her own compositions.
The 'Somewhere With Devo' suite was performed live, one night only, as the encore of the band's Total Devo concert at The Palace in Hollywood, CA on December 9, 1988. The Devo re-mix set by DJ Kinky from 2010, also included here, was never released previously.
Dinner Party are a fuzz-rock band from Manchester. The Three Piece are made up from members of other Manchester bands such as Former Bullies, Irma Vep and Sex Hands. Too Live To Die is their second album and follow-up to their debut, Swinging. Fans of their debut will need no further encouragement to buy this, but newcomers can think of this as a welcome winter warmer.
Most recent converts to the world of Ned Doheny discovered his genius via Hard Candy or Prone. Our introduction was by way of "Postcards From Hollywood", a cult song from his stunning, self-titled debut album. Beautifully poignant, it can only be found on said LP. And whilst his later albums are rightly revered, "Postcards" - and the 9 additional tracks that comprise this exceptional opening statement - represent a criminally overlooked gem. Original vinyl copies of this album are extremely rare - and correspondingly expensive - so we're thrilled to present the first-ever vinyl reissue of a true lost classic.
