Tricky’s Maxinquaye has retained its power and significance long after the term / scene that it first appeared in, trip-hop, has faded from favour. Working closely with vocalist Martina Topley-Bird, Tricky lurks his way around some real classics. 180 gram vinyl reissue for the 20th anniversary, on Music On Vinyl.
Take Me Apart stands not only as an intensely personal chronicle, but also a defiant and turbulent statement direct from Kelela; "Despite it being a personal record, the politics of my identity informs how it sounds and how I choose to articulate my vulnerability and strength. I am a black woman, a second-generation Ethiopian-American, who grew up in the 'burbs listening to R&B, Jazz and Björk.
All of it comes out in one way or another." The process of crafting Take Me Apart embraced the approach of widely collaborative R&B, hip-hop and pop production while roaming a strange and wonderful path. Working with a cast of peers, Kelela deconstructs many results of their collaborations and builds them back up into pieces of a cohesive whole, effectively orchestrating these multitudes in aid of her singular vision. "It's this tapestry I've knitted together that attracts different types of listeners and challenges them at the same time, often within the same song. That's what I want to bring to my entire catalogue" says Kelela.
'American Utopia' is the first solo record in 14 years from iconic polymath David Byrne. The album comes as part of a larger project entitled 'Reasons To Be Cheerful' - a series of works that strives to antidote pervasive social and political anxieties. In keeping with this, 'American Utopia' questions realities of contemporary culture with playful writing that shifts perspectives and favours optimism over despairing pessimism.
Being the product of working with 25 collaborators, 'American Utopia' feels like something of a sonic patchwork, but doesn't ever feel sprawling, neatly tied together by Byrne's inimitable sense of melody and harmony. 'American Utopia' doesn't offer any transcendental conclusions on how to save the world, but advocates positive and unusual ways of looking at the world around us, and with a career underpinned by a singular and indescribable quirkiness, Byrne is the ideal candidate the job.

John Carpenter - Anthology (Movie Themes 1974 - 1998)
As the director and composer behind dozens of classic movies, Carpenter has established a reputation as one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of modern cinema, as well as one of its most influential musicians. The minimal, synthesizer-driven themes to films like Halloween, Escape From New York, and Assault on Precinct 13 are as indelible as their images, and their timelessness was evident as Carpenter performed them live in a string of internationally sold-out concert dates in 2016. Anthology: Movie Themes 1974-1998 collects 13 classic themes from Carpenter’s illustrious career together on one volume for the first time. Each theme has been newly recorded with the same collaborators that Carpenter worked with on his hit Lost Themes studio albums: his son, Cody Carpenter, and godson, Daniel Davies.
Death in Vegas returns with Transmission, the sixth release from the project begun by Richard Fearless nearly two decades ago. This album forges new miles on the path Fearless carved with Satan’s Circus and Trans-Love Energies, and is born of his desire for an ever more raw, refined sound.
United over a love of Throbbing Gristle and Chris and Cosey, Fearless partners with artist and writer Sasha Grey, whose lyrics resonate across the soundscape of visceral techno and unsettling, discordant drones, weaving into a state of dreamlike euphoria. Field recordings of the constant drone of air traffic and incessant noise from the steel factory opposite Fearless’ Metal Box studio, as well as the Ballardian landscape in which it’s set, all exert their pull on the record, searching for light in the dark.
Pete wrote this short-story lyric while we were on a writing trip (drinking holiday) in the Forest Of Dean. Kids in the local pub always put Exterminate by Snap on the jukebox when we were there, which subtly influenced our writing on this. It was once described as sounding like “a row of fridges”. Features an AUTECHRE remix (Chemical Brothers)!
Sebastian has followed such an impressive path that itâs hard to believe that heâs only now releasing his long-awaited debut album. But the facts are clear: after several EPs (H.A.L, Smoking Kills, Ross Ross Ross, Motor), a record compiling his many remixes for Daft Punk, Kelis and the Kills among others (Sebastian Remixes) and a co production of the soundtrack for the film Steak with Sebastien Tellier and Mr Oizo, in which he also played one of the leading roles.
Ever elusive, he unveiled yet another side of his creativity in composing a philharmonic score for Notre Jour Viendra, Romain Gavrasâ first film. One of the creators, along with Justice, of the Ed Banger sound, he is without a doubt the labelâs most unusual figure. An iconoclast maverick he readily defies the rules to deliver a dirty and violent kind of techno that coughs and spits; music to his image: human and visceral. Super prolific and constantly effervescent this musician has managed, in the space of a few years, to redefine electronic music and is ready to astound everyone once again with TOTAL, a definitive and meteoric first album.
The 5th Todd Rundgren album (and his 2nd double album), continuing the experimental vein of the preceding classic "A Wizard, A True Star". As well as pop and electronic experiments Rundgren also tinkers with the synth-heavy progressive sound he would take further with his later band Utopia. Includes the hit ballad "A Dream Goes On Forever" and a version of Gilbert & Sullivan's "Love, Unrequited" called "Lord Chancellor's Nightmare Song".
The under-rated debut solo album (although initially credited to the band 'Runt') by Philadelphia-born multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter Todd Rundgren, originally released in 1970.
After limited success with garage/psych-rock band Nazz, Todd teamed with brothers Hunt and Tony Sales (later with Iggy Pop and Tin Machine) for this varied set, taking in blues-rock, proto-power pop, piano ballads and experimental prog-tinged songs.
The single "We Gotta Get You A Woman" became Todd's first solo hit.
Robyn is one of the most influential artists of modern times. Across five studio albums, two EP’s and a career spanning twenty-three years, she’s accumulated four UK top ten singles, five Grammy nominations, and created some of the most iconic songs of the past two decades, includingDancing On My Own, Call Your Girlfriend, Hang With Meand the Number 1 singleWith Every Heartbeat. Eight years after her dance-pop opus Body Talk set a new standard in the genre for emotional depth, Robyn finally returns with her long-awaited follow-up Honey. The album is dynamic and full of colour. Honey includes work with Metronomy’s Joseph Mount, plus Klas Åhlund, Adam Bainbridge (a.k.a. Kindness), Mr. Tophat and Zhala, who contributed at various points as she worked on it in Stockholm, London, Paris, New York and Ibiza studios.
Granfalloon, is the musical project of Manchester based artist and producer Richard Lomax. Lomax makes a hybrid of lo-fi folk, experimental music, and electronica - weaving oddball elements, such as Omnichords, acoustic guitars, and vintage drum loops, into dreamy songs and cinematic soundscapes. Granfalloon's second album entitled RGB (or Red Green Blue) is out this September on Spotify, Apple Music, and 12" vinyl. The album was recorded in Manchester between John Ellis' Limefield Studio, WR Audio, and their own studio The Dogan. They worked with producer Andrew Glassford (One Little Atlas), and Australian electronic artist/producer Jack Prest (Jonti/Sampa The Great), as well as Lomax producing a lot of the album himself.
Tracey Thorn’s first solo album of entirely original material for seven years. Record is released via Unmade Road / Caroline International. Describing Queen, Tracey says: “It’s a great opener for the album - driven along by Ewan Pearson’s unashamedly glittering electro-pop production, drums and bass from Warpaint’s Stella and Jenny, it features me playing electric guitar for the first time in a while, and singing my heart out.”
Filled with the hits that shot Lady Gaga to superstardom, her second studio album Born This Way is a staple gift for any Gaga fan. Featuring the critically acclaimed The Edge of Glory and collab with Queen guitarist Brian May. 2011, Interscope Records.
Beloved by perfect pop fans, this is Kylie’s most sought-after record. Signposting another left turn in Be With’s ‘baffling roster’ (Pitchfork), we proudly present this album’s first-ever vinyl reissue as a deluxe limited edition.
The album now stretches out over two pieces of 180g vinyl and is presented in a sumptuous gatefold jacket, allowing the iconic Rankin portraits room to breathe.
Along with Sheffield combo Hiem, Rayko is fast becoming Nang Records' most reliable artist. It would be fair to say that his latest album, No Stopping - his fourth in total and first since 2014 - is undoubtedly his strongest yet. Blessed with some fine guest vocals from Tania Haroshka and, perhaps more impressively, Crazy P's Danielle Moore, the set features much more "live instrumentation" - most notably bass and electric guitars - than the Spaniard's previous full-lengths. This adds an extra level of musical richness to the Madrid man's synthesizer-heavy tracks, which once again flit between hard-edged nu-disco, sun-kissed Balearica, revivalist electrofunk sweetness and the kind of cosmic disco that we would once have expected to hear from Daniele Baldelli and Marco Dionigi.
DJs, producers and unrivaled selectors, Danny McLewin and Tom Coveney aka Psychemagik have announced their album ‘I Feel How This Night Should Look’ will be released October 11th via their own imprint Psychemagik Recordings.
Known for their beautiful production work, vast record collections and transcendent mixtape journeys, they boast one of the most impressive and comprehensive remix outputs in contemporary electronic music for names including Roisin Murphy, Noel Gallagher, Haim, Bryan Ferry, Beyond The Wizards Sleeve, Paul Weller and Metronomy.
‘I Feel How This Night Should Look’ is an album with a phenomenal backstory. It spans back over a decade back to when Tom and Danny first met in 2008 and produced the ten tracks over an intensive two year period following the birth of Psychemagik.
To mark the Upsetter’s 80th birthday, an album of dub reworkings by the Mad Professor. The wide-ranging selections include Super Ape standout Zion Blood, Keep on Moving from The Wailers’ Soul Revolution, even harking back to the ska era with Doctor Shit (née Dick). The new CD edition includes adds four tracks not on the LP version.
Ross Birchard has made the leap from beatmaker to genuine super-producer far more spectacularly than most. Drake, Lil Wayne, Bjork, Antony and The Johnsons, R. Kelly, Big Sean, Pusha T, Pharrell, Mark Ronson, Miguel, John Legend, Future, Rick Ross - the list of credits spirals into the upper echelons of adventurous hip pop titans. Hudson Mohawke had been knighted a fully paid-up producer to the stars and then he did what other pop producers fail to do - he went and had a few hits of his own, starting in the summer of 2012 when he and Lunice teamed up for an unassuming drop under the name TNGHT (Warp x LuckyMe), continuing most recently with last year's Chimes EP when Apple chose the track for their new global campaign literally wearing a Hudson Mohawke sticker proudly on their product.
Now he is back with his first solo album in over five years and it's everything you've wanted and very little of what you've expected. 'Lantern' is a fusion album of soaring orchestration and widescreen club dynamics. It looks unwaveringly towards the future while embracing an evolving, timeless canon of pop and soul music; tracks feature Antony Hegarty, Miguel, Jhené Aiko, Irfane, Ruckazoid, and Devaeux. Says HudMo, " This album is everything I've been working towards. I wanted to make a classic - at least for me and my friends. I never wanted to be any genre. I wanted to be my own thing. Everything."
